Sat, Oct 13th – Mt Vernon/Lisbon Chili Cookoff
4:00 – 7:00pm - The Mount Vernon-Lisbon Community Development Group will host the 6th Annual Mount Vernon-Lisbon Chili Cook-off in Uptown Mount Vernon (rain or shine).
The chili cook-off contest is open to the public. The event features more than 20 four-person teams vying for a total of $300 in cash prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and People’s Choice. The cooking will take place from noon to 4 p.m., with the public invited to the tasting portion of the event from 4 to 7 p.m. Sample chili cups are available for 50 cents each, with soda and beverages available for purchase. Admission to the event is free.
New this year will be a beer-tasting tent scheduled to be open from 2 to 4 p.m., with $5 tasting tickets on sale that are good for six tastes of various craft beers including a small selection from San Diego’s popular Stone Brewery.
Live music will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. by singer/songwriters Ben Schmidt and Ryan Bernemann. Also scheduled is a “Souper” 5K Run and a Beanbag Toss/Tournament.

Sat, Oct 27th – The Costume Run
4:00pm – Theatre Cedar Rapids to NewBo City Market: The Costume Run is co-presented by two Third Street nonprofits that hope to make an annual tradition of this interactive and theatrical twist on the traditional 5K fun run/walk. The un-timed race starts on stage and follows a path downtown that is focused on the trail, including Greene Square Park, along the river and features a stretch that actually runs through the Circle of Ash haunted house (with the lights on). That isn’t the only interactive feature of the run as there will be an activity of sorts approximately every kilometer or five times along the course. Every activity completed earns participants a door prize chance! Go to www.theatrecr.org to register.
